![]() ![]() After a day-long stand-off, Li finally attempted to escape the bus through a window, but was tasered and arrested. He proceeded to dismember, decapitate, and cannibalize McLean's body while everyone else fled the bus and police arrived. Two of them and the driver attempted to save McLean, but Li chased them away with the knife. After sitting next to McLean (who fell asleep and barely acknowledged him), Li suddenly withdrew a knife and stabbed McLean to death while numerous passengers looked on in horror. Li also boarded the bus a short time later. Tim McLean, who was returning home from work, boarded a Greyhound bus. The very next morning, Li sold his laptop to a boy. There, he spent the night on a bench outside a grocery store. On July 29, 2008, Li boarded a bus heading for Winnipeg and arrived in Erickson. By all accounts, Li was described as normal. Weeks before the attack, he was fired from his job at Walmart. Li then moved to Edmonton without his wife (who later joined him) and he acquired several other jobs. He quit his job in 2006 and became a forklift operator. Li at some point married a woman named Anna and became a menial worker at Grant Memorial Church, working there for six months despite the language barrier between him and others. Li was institutionalized sometime before gaining his citizenship after being found by officers "following the sun", something he claimed God told him to do. He moved to Canada in 2001 and obtained legal Canadian citizenship in 2006. Little is known about his early life, but he did graduate from the Wuhan Institute of Technology and acquired a job as a computer software engineer. 3 Trial, Institutionalization, and Release.Once upon a time, Vince Li posed no significant threat to the public, and then he went off his meds with no one knowing. In 1999, however, the Supreme of Canada ruled that people found not criminally responsible for their crimes must be given an absolute discharge - without restrictions or conditions - if they no longer pose a significant threat to the public. It is all well and good, of course, to destigmatize mental illness but quite another to believe that Li is a miracle of forensic psychiatry, and has an almost zero chance of reoffending.Īs de Delley told CTV Monday, “He has an incurable illness that makes him do terrible things, and I believe he needs to be in an institution that addresses those needs.” She told me of how she was left to her nightmares and, while Li was being treated with kid gloves, she was abandoned to seek therapy on her own to deal with her emotional trauma. It was at this time I interviewed Carol de Delley, McLean’s mother, at her home on the outskirts of Winnipeg. ![]() Not even God would pretend to be that precise. It’s as simple as that.Ī few years ago, a psychiatrist at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre near Winnipeg seeking limited freedom for Li set the wheels in motion by testifying that Li had a 0.8% chance of reoffending. The reason Li had so dramatically short-circuited in 2008, and had begun to hear voices urging him to kill? If he gets it, it will be as if McLean’s murder never happened, with nothing on the books even mentioning Li. The Criminal Code Review Board in Manitoba said Monday it needs a “few days” to decide if Li gets the absolute discharge he is seeking. Li, who suffers from a severe form of schizophrenia, was found not criminally responsible for his macabre actions, and sent off to a maximum-security mental health facility presumably for life, but has since gained incremental freedom and started living alone last year, although he's still being monitored. The public is supposed to believe that forensic psychiatrists can walk on water, and are infallible in their diagnoses, even though the human brain is stuffed with the complexities of a 100-billion neurons, each with upwards of 100,000 synaptic connections that must line up precisely in order to avoid the prospect of short-circuiting.Įditorial: With no conditions, Vince Li is a threat The 2008 murder of 22-year-old Tim McLean, attacked as he slept in his seat on a bus about an hour outside of his home town of Winnipeg, was one of the most ultra-violent killings imaginable.īut today Li is closer to being a free man, with no conditions. Time does not erase or sanitize those facts. OK Article contentĬall him Vince Li, or call him by his new alias Will Baker, but also call him what he is - a cannibal killer who beheaded his victim in the back of a Greyhound bus, cut out his heart and ate a piece of it.
